What I'm worried about the AI boom.

My worry / thoughts on AI boom.

We've been hearing about the AI boom for quite a bit now. We're in a very exciting period where LLM's like chatgpt and others are doing great stuff. Now if we focus on the news put out by news channels, its mostly about layoffs ( often in tech ).

Now, to be honest this is not something that worries me today. If you've had the chance of getting a college education, learnt through trade schools or via bootcamps etc, in any domain. You do not have to be scared. Change is inevitable.

I had this thought or worry a couple days ago to be precise. Recently I've been travelling quite often and had the chance to interact with a lot of people from very different domains.

It's just that the places I went are somewhere between a village and a city. When I was working full time, I lived in a city, with a lot of tech companies, basically an industrial area. And so, majority of the people I communicated with were working at some company, about 99% percent of them were aware of AI, even the people in HR, sales, marketing etc. Even the people who were running small business ( not related to tech in any way ) were somehow aware of AI and its happenings, may be due to the conversations that happen around them.

Now what worried me. As I interacted with people during my travel, I realized, there is a huge subset of people / population who have yet heard about AI, or what AI is about, or what it can do. Now this is not their fault obviously.

Now this includes, people in their late 40's ( slightly moving to retirement ), school students, where their interaction with computers is just drawing stuff on paint and the youth.

I think this subset is who are going to get affected on an entirely different scale. By the time, it hits them and they realize, its too late for them to cope up with the others.
